Eating Disorders and Disability

About this course

More than 1 in 4 adults in the US have a disability, according to a report published by the CDC in 2024. This presentation will look at the intersection between eating disorders and disabilities, explore special considerations when working with clients with both an eating disorder and a disability/disabilities, explore biases that providers may hold around disability and identify strategies to increase inclusion and accessibility in treatment for both clients and staff with disabilities. This is an EDI-sponsored CE

  • Articulate disability terminology, including terminology to avoid and understand disability etiquette
  • Identify at least 5 models of disability and identify the benefits and drawbacks of the models
  • Identify at least 4 interventions that can be utilized to increase inclusion and accessibility for individuals with disabilities.

  • Katherine McMahon, MSSA, LISW-S, CPACC

    Katherine (Katie) McMahon (she/her/hers), MSSA, LISW-S, CPACC is a Clinical Trainer for Accanto Health and works as an outpatient therapist at The Emily Program location in Cleveland, Ohio. She has been working in the field of eating disorder treatment since 2015 and concentrates on the utilization of CBT-E for adults. Katie has a special interest in working with clients who are diagnosed with Binge Eating Disorder (BED), those who are experiencing body image issues, explore ways to increase inclusive care for marginalized populations and exploring the intersection between chronic health conditions/disability and eating disorders. Katie has experience providing individual therapy and group therapy in both outpatient and higher level of care settings and also serves as a licensure supervisor for social workers in both adult and adolescent residential and PHP settings. As a clinical trainer, Katie has a passion for all things CBT and supporting new and seasoned staff through onboarding, supervision, a bi-weekly CBT-E consult group and a weekly ED fundamentals group for the Midwest region. Katie is also a member of the International Association of Accessibility Professionals and is a Certified Professional in Accessibility Core Competencies. Prior to her work at TEP, Katie worked in community mental health as both a case manager and a Program Manager, a hospital setting and a free clinic. Katie has a bachelor’s degree in Social Work from Bowling Green State University and completed her graduate education at the Case Western Reserve University Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences with a concentration on medical social work.
