Family Matters: Eating Disorders Treatment with Families

About this course

This training will present clinical rationale and empirical support for working with families of children, adolescents, and young adults in eating disorders treatment. Family Based Treatment (FBT) and other family-involved approaches and interventions recommended for use in outpatient as well as in higher levels of care will be explored. Participants will be encouraged to consider their own beliefs about the role of families in the development of an eating disorder and how our perspective may influence family involvement, treatment effectiveness, and ultimately, client outcomes. This training is intended for clinicians of all experience levels.

Learning Objectives

  • State at least 2 reasons for including families of adolescents in eating disorders treatment.
  • List the 4 recommended focus areas of family sessions in HLOC.
  • State the primary treatment objective for each of the three phases of FBT.

  • Liz McCabe

    Liz McCabe (she/her) joined The Emily Program (TEP) in 2015 as the Pittsburgh Site Director to expand access to eating disorders specialty care in the southwestern Pennsylvania region and has more recently served as TEP’s chief clinical officer and currently is the senior director of outpatient clinical services. She brings over 35 years of clinical experience and program leadership to her work with clients and their supports. She has worked with children, adolescents, and adults in inpatient and outpatient settings and across the domains of clinical practice, supervision, program development, administration, teaching, and research.
