[Internal] Working with Clients Post-Bariatric Surgery

CE Hours 2

About this course

There is considerable research evidencing a high prevalence of eating disorders among patients seeking bariatric surgery. Additionally, it is known that eating disorders may persist, or even arise, post-surgically. Individuals who have undergone bariatric surgery may also experience medical, psychological and nutritional concerns while facing additional challenges due to the often-contradictory dietary guidelines for post-surgical patients compared to recommendations for eating disorder recovery. For these (and various other) reasons, it is important that providers working in the field of eating disorders be knowledgeable and equipped to support patients who are considering, or have undergone, bariatric surgery. In this talk, information will be provided by a multi-disciplinary team regarding the realities of bariatric surgery and eating disorders. The medical, psychological and nutritional challenges frequently observed in people post surgical weight loss interventions will be reviewed, as will strategies for effectively supporting individuals who are striving to overcome disordered eating while adjusting to postsurgical living.
