CBT-E for Adolescents: Utilizing Evidenced Based Practices When FBT isn't Accessible

CE Hours 1

About this live event

FBT has long been considered gold standard treatment option for adolescents with eating disorders. however, adherent FBT may not be an accessible or feasible option for all families. Enhanced Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT-E) is an additional treatment modality with comparative results to FBT treatment at both 6 and 12 month follow ups. According to Le Grange, et al (2020), clients opting for CBT-E instead of FBT were older, had been ill longer, presented with higher depression and anxiety, more prior mental health treatment, and higher rates of psychosocial impairment due to eating disorder features. This presentation will consider the utilization of CBT-E in HLOC and OP as a promising treatment modality for adolescent clients who present to treatment with additional considerations and barriers to FBT effectiveness.

Learning Objectives

  • Differentiate between 2 key FBT concepts and 2 key CBT-E concepts.
  • Become familiar with barriers to FBT accessibility, and identify ways to problem solve barriers to FBT accessibility prior to recommending CBT-E treatment. is difficult vs when FBT is inaccessible, leading to a potential recommendation for CBT-E
  • Demonstrate an understanding of treatment outcome differences between FBT and CBT-E to appropriatley provide informed consent of services to clients.
