Thoughtful and Thought-Provoking: How to Best Help Those with Long-term Eating Disorders

About this live event

Data and clinical experience indicate that some individuals will experience a lengthy course of an eating disorder. While existing treatments across the field have not sufficiently evolved to adequately address the needs of these individuals, many efforts are underway to understand what would be helpful. Join this panel conversation with long-standing experts in the field as they discuss what is holding us back from better options for people with an extended form of the illness and share their ideas for what those better options might look like and what it would take to make them a reality.

This educational program is designed for mental health professionals, dietitians, social workers, and health care providers.

Agenda

Introduction of panelists and opening remarks regarding long term eating disorders (10 minutes)
Question 1: Today we’re talking about how best to help those with long-term eating disorders. Let’s start with how you both might describe/define what we mean by long term? Do we include some indication of age, duration, treatment attempts, etc? How would you describe the concept? (10 minutes)
Question 2: How does how you describe this group of people impact how we think about treatment delivery? (10 minutes)
Question 3: When you think about this group, what has changed in the field’s thinking about how we best help people with long-term eating disorders? What are we missing? What have we gotten not quite right? (10 minutes)
Question 4: Harm reduction is a concept talked about in other areas of mental health – how does that fit into to our approach with this population? (10 minutes)
Question 5: How have you seen the concept of harm reduction evolve in the field? Where do you think it goes next? (10 minutes)
Question 6: You have both have seen a lot of the evolution of the field, in your view what’s most different today in how we care for folks with eating disorders than some time you can think back to early in your career? (10 minutes)

Live event Instructor(s)

  • Jillian Lampert, PhD, RD, LD, MPH, FAED

    Dr. Lampert is the Vice President of Strategy and Public Affairs for Accanto Health, the parent company of The Emily Program and Gather Behavioral Health. She has 30 years of experience in the field of eating disorders as a clinician, leader, speaker, advocate, and researcher in the field of eating disorders working across all levels of care and multiple care settings. Additionally, Dr. Lampert is Co-Founder and President of the REDC, the national consortium representing eating disorders care focused on treatment standards, best practices, access to care, and collaborative research and a Board Member of the Eating Disorders Coalition, a DC-based national organization for eating disorders policy and advocacy. She holds an adjunct graduate faculty position in the Department of Food Science and Nutrition at the University of Minnesota where she advises graduate students and teaches a course on eating disorder management.

    Dr. Lampert completed her doctorate degree in Nutrition and Epidemiology and Master of Public Health degree in Public Health Nutrition at the University of Minnesota. She earned a Master of Science degree in Nutrition at the University of Vermont and completed her dietetic internship at the University of Minnesota Hospital and Clinics. She has an expansive range of policy, clinical, research, education, teaching, and program development experience in the area of eating disorders.

    Dr. Lampert has served on the Board of Directors of the Academy for Eating Disorders and as co-chair of the Academy for Eating Disorders Nutrition Special Interest Group. She is a Fellow of the Academy for Eating Disorders (FAED) and a member of the Academy for Nutrition and Dietetics (formerly the American Dietetic Association), and BHN (Behavioral Health Nutrition) dietetic practice group. Dr. Lampert is the author of numerous book chapters and articles addressing the nutritional treatment of eating disorders, body image, sports participation, adolescent health, and disordered eating and she regularly speaks regionally and nationally on numerous eating disorder-related topics.

    One of her primary goals in life is to have the kids in her house (and everywhere!) have confident, loving relationships with their bodies and themselves.

  • Scott Crow, MD

    Scott Crow, MD received his BA in Microbiology and completed medical school and his psychiatric residency at the University of Minnesota, where he was Chief Resident and completed a fellowship in Consult-Liaison Psychiatry. An adult psychiatrist specializing in eating disorders, Dr. Crow is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry & Neurology. His research has been funded by NIMH, and he has published over 300 peer-reviewed articles. He currently serves as Editor in Chief of Eating Disorders Review and has held leadership roles including President of both the Minnesota Psychiatric Society and the Academy for Eating Disorders.

  • Dirk Miller, PhD

    Dirk Miller (he/him) is the founder of The Emily Program, the Executive Chair of Accanto Health’s Board of Directors, and a Leader of the Clinical Advisory Council for Accanto Health. In these roles, In these roles, Dirk is responsible for guiding the strategic vision of the organization, overseeing clinical excellence, and supporting the ongoing evolution of treatment philosophy and quality care outcomes. Dirk has over 35 years of experience in the treatment of eating disorders, substance use disorders, and other mental and behavioral health issues. He founded and formerly ran the Memorial Hospital’s HOPE program for eating disorders and the Renaissance Intensive Outpatient alcohol and drug treatment program in Elkhart General Hospital. Dirk is a founding member of REDC, as well as a current member of the Board of Directors and Chair of the Ethics Committee. He is also actively involved as a Board member of the Retreat in Wayzata, MN, a Founder and Board Member Emeritus of WithAll, and a former member of the Governing Council of the MN Psychological Association. Additionally, Dirk is a Distinguished Alumni of the University of Minnesota and recipient of the Larry Johnson Award. He has spoken nationally on a variety of mental health treatment topics and consults with many healthcare organizations. Both Dirk and his sister Emily experienced eating disorders but lacked access to appropriate treatment programs. For him, it’s been a dream come true to build The Emily Program and observe the growth of Accanto Health.

Attendance Policy

All attendance will be monitored and recorded. Due to accreditation guidelines, continuing education credit will not be awarded to participants who do not attend a presentation in its entirety. Participants not meeting this time requirement will not be awarded continuing education (CE) credits.
